Ecolution Consulting Turns 15 on Earth Day: Celebrating 500+ Projects, 100+ Certifications, and a Bold New Look
On Earth Day 2026, Ecolution Consulting celebrates its 15th anniversary. A milestone that not only represents more than a decade and a half of existence, but also over 500 projects, over 100 green building certifications, and countless memories with the people who made it all possible.
To mark this moment, Ecolution is proud to unveil a fresh new brand identity. One that reflects who the firm has become over 15 years, and the bold future it is working to shape. A future where the spaces people live and work in prioritise resource efficiency, technical excellence, and ecological stewardship, while enriching the lives of those who use them.
At the core of Ecolution’s approach over the years has been that of integrated sustainability, efficiency and social impact. "When we started out, the green building industry in South Africa was very much still in its infancy,” says founder André Harms, “It’s hard to believe that since those early days we have been privileged enough to be part of some of the most ambitious sustainability projects on the continent”. This has included a number of firsts for Africa, including:
the first 6 Star Green Star Sustainable Precinct development, Newinbosch Neighbourhood Estate
the first double LEED Platinum hotel, Hotel Verde
the first Level 2 (base build and occupant emissions) Net Zero certified project, Two Dam Sustainable, and
the first residential project to receive EDGE final certification, Four Leaf Estate
Over the years, Ecolution has also been carefully measuring their impact in tangible numbers using a sustainability dashboard to track the impact of some of their key projects. Through this, the company has been able to quantify that Ecolution’s key certified projects have contributed to:
2.9 m² of floor area greened (the equivalent of 414 rugby fields of space)
1,000,000+ m³ of water saved (the equivalent of over 6.4 million people’s daily water use, based on Cape Town averages)
122,000+ MWh of energy saved (the equivalent energy of 93 million hot showers based on an average 8 minute shower)
The sustainability dashboard, while not a total representation of the company’s impact, also looks at tracking their internal sustainability successes. For example, after initially setting the goal in 2019, Ecolution officially became a carbon neutral business in 2025.
“For us, it’s incredibly important that we actively implement the principles we recommend to our clients within our own operations,” says André.
When reflecting on Ecolution’s impact over the years, green building consultant Obayd Hoosain reflects on what he’s appreciated most: “despite the rapid growth and innovation within the industry, Ecolution has remained grounded in its core values,” he says. “As sustainability practitioners, we are not just consultants but stewards and change agents, and it’s clear that this mindset has remained central to Ecolution’s journey.”
In keeping with that approach, the Ecolution team will be celebrating the anniversary with two meaningful acts, one digital, and one deeply rooted in the heart of Cape Town. The team are launching a social media campaign in which each team member will share one of their favourite personal acts of sustainability; a reminder that the green building movement is made up of people who live out their values every day. Ecolution will also mark its 15th birthday with a hands-on celebration at Vegkop Farm in the Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA) - a critical agricultural hub in Cape Town's Cape Flats that supplies a significant share of the city's fresh fruit and vegetables.
The PHA Campaign advocates for the protection of this irreplaceable farming zone from unsustainable development, while championing sustainable polyculture practices and land reform. The campaign is housed at Vegkop, a polyculture farm currently redesigning its layout to become more climate resilient. As part of this effort, Ecolution will donate 15 one-metre-high trees to support Vegkop's climate resilience process and join the farm’s team for a day of planting, a shared meal, and an opportunity to learn more about their incredible work.
As for the next phase of Ecolution’s path, green building consultant Ayesha Nakwa hopes that the team will “continue to inspire individuals and businesses to operate as sustainably as possible,” she says. “But also that they carry these lessons in sustainability home and share it with the people around them.”
“My aspiration for Ecolution” says André “is that it remains a sanctuary for inspiring and skilled professionals who can leverage their expertise to drive systemic, positive change. I hope we continue to be a home for those who view sustainability not just as a career, but as a means to create a regenerative future”.
